We spend a lot of time each week preparing our weekly spelling words. We're doing a great job getting the hang of it while also learning how to navigate our way through the Chromebook. We know that when we put a lot of time and effort into our words during the week, it is reflected on our tests. Because of this, we are learning how good it feels when we work hard and succeed! Applying these same strategies of consistency, focus and practice to other areas of our lives, will produce similar results! We also realize that learning how to spell words for one test isn't enough. We have to use these words on a regular basis. Throughout the year, during a spelling station, we will do activities which incorporate all of our spelling words from the whole year. Please continue to encourage this practice at home! VOCABULARY Since we didn't get enough time to practice and apply this week's vocabulary words throughout the week, we will carry them over for next week! For example.... SENTENCE FRAGMENTS - We can explain to you what makes a sentence a sentence. A sentence needs more than a who or a what (subject). It also needs more than the action (verb). A sentence needs both of these to be a sentence. When one is missing, it is called a sentence fragment! Please review the worksheets with me at home! We will be focusing on these all week! READING: In reading, we are continuing to use all the strategies to figure out 'tricky' words. Did the author give enough information so you can figure out the word by the gist of what's going on? Did the author provide an explanation of the word, at some point in the text? Perhaps, he/she included a synonym or an antonym of the word? Whatever it may be, we are reading detectives on the look out for clues to figure out what these words mean. When we do figure it out, we will start recording them in our word books. WRITING: Since we're writing SMALL MOMENT stories, our first line of business is to actually know how to do this! One strategy we're working on is by taking a section of our writing and rewriting it by including dialogue. Once we start having our characters talk, new things start happening. It suddenly comes alive with humor, excitement, details and much more. Ask me to show you an example! MATH: Learning how to communicate our thinking is something all good mathematicians know how to do. We don't just figure out the problem, we communicate and represent all of our thinking. Stating what it is we need to find out in a complete sentence is something that will help us stay organized. Next, we think about strategies we can use for solving the problem and include our 'math words' while we do this. When it's time to solve the problem, we make sure all of our work is organized, labeled and accurate. There are many ways to do this. Right now we're focusing on making tables and charts. We'll also be including keys - one of our vocabulary words - while problem solving. Once we practice, it becomes much more natural. Ask me to 'teach' you! SCIENCE: Next week we're excited to dive into the PALEONTOLOGY DIVISION as SECRET AGENTS. We will look for clues from our past to discover new and exciting things. We'll observe, wonder and ask questions like all good scientists do! Stay tuned for our discoveries...
