We explored all kinds of nature. We collected pond specimen and studied our finds. We balanced wet sponges on our heads. We hopped. We jumped. We crawled. We tugged. We hid under a parachute. We watched some amazing talent and danced a lot! What a fun-filled week! Please take a look at the pictures and ask me to tell you all about what's happening. It will be much more interesting coming from me!
...that there used to be a gas station where Union Bank is now?
What an exciting and fun-filled week! We visited the Goshen Historical Society, Goshen Town Hall and the Union Bank of Goshen.
We learned how Goshen used to have 13 school districts. We looked on a map from the 1800's and figured out where we would have attended school - before cars and buses. Did you know that there was a Goshen Center School in the 1800's? However, it was located next to the Congregational Church.
Eventually when the schools became one Goshen Center School, did you know that the Town Hall used to be the school? The room next door to the First Selectman's office used to be a Second Grade Classroom when Mr. Valentine attended school there!
We also learned all about the important work being done in the Land Use Office. Did you know that the new requirements state that there needs to be a smoke alarm in every bedroom now? How about the fact that the good people of Goshen who volunteer their time, are working hard to figure out the weed problem in our lakes and ponds? It's easy to take for granted all we have and important to understand the time and effort involved in running a wonderful town like Goshen!
One reason why Second Graders ROCK is because we are working so hard on writing opinion pieces. Not only do we state our opinion, but we HOOK the reader with a fabulous introduction to our topic. Some of us make it a mystery for the reader - what will this piece be about? Some of us ask questions about our topic. Others list facts about our topic before we give our opinion. Once we give our opinion, we know that in order to organize our thoughts, we begin a new paragraph. Our paragraphs start off with a variety of transition words that tell our readers what's coming up. Then, we fill up the paragraph with amazing details. Wait until you see all we've written! READING~ In reading, we are continuing to read our book series and writing about them, too. We are noticing when a character has a problem and how he/she responds to the problem. We're also noticing how characters are the same between books. This helps us make better predictions as we read books within the same series! In fact, we're so excited about our reading, some of us request a 'working snack' so we can keep going! WOW! MATH~ In math, we are continuing to collect money but now we're going up to $5.00, $10.00 and beyond! We're trading in our change and making change! We're also setting the stage for third grade multiplication concepts. We're using tables to represent ratio relationships between two quantities and noticing patterns when we count by 2's, 5's and 10's. If we start off with 38 cubes and make towers of 2, how many towers will there be? Any leftovers? How about towers of 5 or 10? How many towers will there be? Any leftovers? Ask me to draw a table, pick a number and demonstrate for you all I know!
